Syringa vulgaris

The common lilac (Syringa vulgaris) is a plant that belongs to the family of the olive family (Oleaceae),.

The plant grows as a deciduous shrub or small tree with height 2:00 to 6:00 meters. The branches have a rounded gray green or brown bark, which is longitudinal cracks on the branches and the trunk.

The opposite leaves arranged between five and 12 centimeters long and are stalked by three centimeters. The heart-shaped leaves are long and pointed glattrandig.

The strong-smelling, flowers are four-fold in a dense terminal panicle. The color can be blue, purple, red or white. Flowering period is from April to May.

As bivalve fruits, brown and woody capsules are formed. The fruit ripening begins in September.

The common lilac is widespread in southeastern Europe and western Asia. The type is often grown in a number of garden varieties and is naturalized in many cliffs or railway embankments.

As the site of open woods and thickets are preferred.
