The Summer Adonis Plant

Summer adonis or glowing coal (Adonis aestivalis) is an annual plant belonging to the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae). The species is on the Dutch Red List of plants in the Netherlands from the game disappeared. Summer adonis occurs naturally in Eurasia. The plant is used in the ornamental garden.

The plant is 20-50 cm high and blooms from May to July with vermilion flowers. Inflorescence one flower per flower stem or a single cyme. The calyx is against the spread petals pressed. The flowers are yellow and sometimes at the foot often have a dark spot. The fine blade is about triple piece. The fruit is an achene, which is spread by animals.

Summer adonis occurs between the grain, but in the Netherlands last seen in 1936. In Flanders the last observation dates from 1902. In Wallonia, the plant in the Lorraine and Meuse district until 1950. The disappearance of the plant has to do with purifying the seed of the wheat fields of weeds.

The plant is very toxic by the presence of glycosides. The plant is 0.2 to 0.4% for adonitoxine with cymarine and is highest at flowering.
