The Danish Spoon Blade Plant

Danish spoon blade (Cochlearia danica) is an annual plant belonging to the finial family (Brassicaceae). The species is found on beach plains, in the dunes and dikes. In recent years the plant is becoming more common along roads that are salted during the winter. The plant is indigenous to the coast of Western Europe and the Baltic region.


The plant is 5-25 cm high and has dark green to strongly reddened, meerkantige stems. The lower, long-stemmed leaves are fleshy ground and breedeirond and heart-shaped base. The seated stem leaves are three to five lobed.


Danish spoon blade blooms from April to June with white flowers. The petals are about 3 mm long. The sepals have a purplish color.


The fruit is a spherical to elliptical, 3-6 mm long hauwtje.
