About the Red Honeysuckle Shrub

The red honeysuckle (Lonicera xylosteum) is a shrub belonging to the honeysuckle family (Caprifoliaceae). The shrub is often planted and is also neglected. The older branches are hollow and therefore have a Bothidae form. The species name comes from the Greek xylosteum Xylos that wood and bone osteons that means. The shrub is native to Eurasia.


The shrub 1-2 m high. The young branches are short-pressed hairs. Hairy on both surfaces, 2-6 cm long leaves are ovate to ovate with a wedge-shaped foot.


The red honeysuckle blooms in May and June with yellowish white, 8-15 mm wide flowers at the foot often reddish in color. The corolla is felt-like hairs on the outside.


The shiny, bright red fruit is a berry, which, because of the bitter substance is toxic to humans xylosteïne.


The plant is found on moist, lime-rich soil in deciduous forests, forest edges, hedges and bushes.
